Assess Your Bone Health with a DEXA Scan

The DEXA Scan is the gold standard in diagnosing osteoporosis and evaluating fracture risk by measuring bone mineral density.

This quick, painless and non-invasive test uses low-dose X-rays to accurately assess bone health, especially in the hip and spine.

It's the most reliable method for detecting early signs of osteoporosis and helping prevent future fractures.

The procedure takes just a few minutes, with no recovery time needed.

Most people don't realise their bones are weakening until a fracture happens. A DEXA scan changes that — it is a quick, painless test that measures your bone density before problems arise, giving you and your doctor the information needed to act early and protect your health.

At Scans World, we offer DEXA scanning (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) — the gold standard test for diagnosing osteoporosis and assessing fracture risk at our Aminjikarai, Nandanam and Nanganallur centres. The procedure takes just 15 to 20 minutes, uses an extremely low dose of radiation and requires no injection or special preparation. Results are ready the same day.

What is a DEXA Scan?

DEXA stands for Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. It uses two low-energy X-ray beams to measure the density of minerals, primarily calcium in your bones. The denser your bones, the stronger they are. The result is expressed as a T-score, which tells you how your bone density compares to that of a healthy young adult.

The scan focuses primarily on the hip and lumbar spine, the two areas most prone to fractures in people with osteoporosis. It is painless, takes only 15–20 minutes and is considered the most accurate and reliable bone density test available today.

T-SCORE GUIDE:

–1.0 or above
Normal bone density
Healthy bone strength
–1.0 to –2.5
Osteopenia
Low bone density - early warning
–2.5 or below
Osteoporosis
Significantly low density - high fracture risk

Who should get a DEXA Scan?

  • Women above 45 - especially post-menopausal women
  • Men above 60
  • Long-term steroid users (3+ months)
  • People with a history of fractures
  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • Low body weight
  • Smokers and heavy drinkers
  • Monitoring bone health treatment effectiveness

What conditions does a DEXA scan detect?

  • Osteoporosis – extreme loss of bone density with high fracture risk
  • Osteopenia – early bone thinning before osteoporosis develops
  • Risk of vertebral fractures, particularly in the lower back
  • Hip fracture risk assessment – for older adults
  • Secondary osteoporosis – from steroid use, thyroid problems or malabsorption
  • Monitoring treatment response – tracking improvement after bone health medication
  • Body composition analysis - ratio of fat mass to lean mass

What to expect during your DEXA scan

A DEXA scan is one of the easiest and most comfortable imaging procedures you will ever have. You lie on a padded table, fully clothed, while a slim scanning arm moves slowly over your body — typically focusing on the lower spine and hip. There is no enclosed tunnel, no loud noise and absolutely no discomfort.

The entire procedure takes just 15 to 20 minutes. You can go about your normal day immediately after. Our radiologist will provide a detailed report including your T-score, Z-score and fracture risk assessment — typically ready the same day.

BEFORE YOUR SCAN: Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before the test. Wear comfortable clothing without metal zips, belts, or buttons. No fasting required. Inform our team if you have had a recent contrast injection or nuclear medicine scan.

Frequently Asked Questions

A DEXA Scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold standard test to assess bone mineral density. It uses low dose x-rays to accurately assess bone strength and detect early signs of osteoporosis and fracture risk.

Bone Mineral Densitometry measures the amount of calcium and other minerals in a certain area of bone, typically the hip and spine. They help doctors know how strong or weak your bones are and if you are at risk of fractures.

DEXA Scan can identify osteoporosis (thinning of the bones), osteopenia (low bone density before osteoporosis develops) and fracture risk. It also keeps an eye on how well bone-health treatments are working over time.

A DEXA Scan should be considered for women over 45 years of age (particularly post-menopausal), men over 60 years of age, people with a history of fractures, people who are on long-term steroid medications, people with low body weight and anyone with a family history of osteoporosis.

You lie on your back on a padded table and a scanner arm moves slowly over your body. The test is totally painless and non-invasive. It scans mainly the hip and lower spine area. The whole process only takes 10-20 minutes and there is no down time.

Do not take any calcium supplements within 24 hours of the scan. Wear loose-fitting clothing with no metal zips or buttons. No fasting is required. Inform the technician if you have had any contrast injections or nuclear medicine tests recently.

A DEXA Scan uses an extremely low dose of radiation — much lower than a standard X-ray and far less than a CT scan — making it safe even for routine monitoring and repeat testing.

For most people at risk, a DEXA Scan every 1–2 years is recommended to monitor changes in bone density. Your doctor will advise the right frequency based on your age, risk factors and current bone health status.

Reports of DEXA Scan are usually available on the same day or within 24 hours at Scans World. Our expert radiologists provide accurate readings of T-score and Z-score for the formulation of your treatment plan.
